Casanova is the most charismatic and popular hero-lover in European history. He tends to be the guest of honor in the nightly fantasies of the female unconscious. The figure of the famous Venetian adventurer has always been shrouded in a romantic veil; he has tacitly given his name to many of his contemporaries as a fancy word for such terms as “ladies’ man” or “conqueror of hearts.” We cannot see Casanova’s face; he appears as a kind of archetype that every woman might use to identify her “perfect man.” In interacting with the sculpture, the viewer “possesses” Casanova and establishes close “face-to-face” contact with the imaginary lover of one’s dreams.
